My sister called at 6:30 a.m. and said, “Dad died last night.” I looked across the kitchen

PART 3 ENDING

My sister called me at 6:30 in the morning and told me our father had died during the night.

There was just one problem.

He was sitting three feet away from me.

Alive.

Drinking my coffee.

And eating my bacon.

I stared at the name glowing on my phone.

Vanessa Cole.

My older sister almost never called before noon.

So when I saw her name that early in the morning, my heart immediately sank.

Something terrible had happened.

At least, that’s what I thought.

I had no idea Vanessa was about to invent the tragedy herself.

Dad reached across the kitchen table for another strip of bacon as I answered the call.

“Vanessa?”

For two seconds, I heard nothing except the low hum of a car engine and the rhythmic clicking of a turn signal.
