My husband Thomas was gone 16 days when the hospice nurse called to ask if I knew a woman named Maryanne.

PART 3

“I’m fine.”

“You’ve said that every day for two weeks.”

He set the groceries down and looked around the workshop.

Dad’s kingdom.

Everything remained exactly as Thomas had left it—the drill press, the cedar shavings, the old radio permanently tuned to country music.

Daniel smiled sadly.

“I still

expect him to yell because I put the screwdriver back in the wrong drawer.”

That almost broke me.

Instead, I asked the question that had suddenly become the center of my world.

“Daniel… did your father ever mention someone named Maryanne?”

His forehead wrinkled.

“Maryanne?”

I watched his face carefully.

Nothing.

“No,” he said slowly. “Who’s Maryanne?”

“A hospice nurse said Dad asked for her before he died.”

Daniel frowned.
