My mother told me at her kitchen table that my brother is moving his family in, so I need to leave by the first.

PART 5

Daniel placed his briefcase on the table.

Ms. Farrow remained beside him, holding a thick file against her chest.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

For the first time since I could remember, Shane wasn’t the loudest person in the room.

Daniel looked around the kitchen.

“Before we begin, I

want everyone to understand something. This isn’t a family argument anymore.”

Shane crossed his arms.

“Then what is it?”

“A property matter.”

He looked at me.

“And potentially a financial matter.”

My mother lowered her head.

Misty whispered, “This is ridiculous.”

Daniel ignored her.

He opened the file.

“The recorded deed for this property lists Michelle Dunn and Emily Dunn as joint grantees.”

Shane shook his head.

“My mother paid for this house.”
