My mother told me at her kitchen table that my brother is moving his family in, so I need to leave by the first.

PART 4

The next paragraph began with four words.

I need you to forgive me.

I read the sentence again.

Then again.

My father’s handwriting was unmistakable. Slightly slanted. Careful. The same handwriting he’d used on birthday cards, grocery lists, and notes he’d left beside my coffee when I was still married.

I kept reading.

I need you to forgive me for something I did not have the courage to tell you while I was alive.

My throat tightened.

Your mother did not buy this house for you. I did.

I stared at the page.

The room suddenly felt too quiet.

I continued.

After your divorce, you were determined to use the money to pay off your debts and start over. Your mother told me you needed somewhere safe to live. I agreed, but I did not trust her judgment about the house.
