From fear. “I had a nightmare.” I sat beside her. “What happened?” “There was a lady.” My hand froze. “What lady?” “She was in my room.” “When?” “In my dream.” I exhaled. “What did she look like?” Sophie frowned. “Brown hair.” “Anything else?” “She kept saying sorry.” I stroked her forehead. “Dreams are weird after anesthesia.” “She was crying.” “It’s okay.” “She had a baby blanket.” I stopped. “What kind?” “Yellow.” My heart began pounding. “Why?” “She put it over me.” I looked at Daniel. He looked equally unsettled. “Sophie, have you ever seen that woman before?” “I don’t know.” “Think.” She closed her eyes. “No.” Then she opened them. “Maybe.” “Where?” She looked confused. “In the picture.” “What picture?” “The lady on Dad’s old phone.” Eric had entered the room behind us. His face drained. “What picture?” Sophie pointed toward him. “You showed me once.” Eric looked terrified. “I showed you what?” “When we were looking at baby pictures.” His mouth opened. Nothing came out. “What woman?” I asked. Sophie yawned. “The one holding the baby.” Eric backed toward the wall. “Rachel?” I said. He didn’t answer. “Eric.” “Yes.” I felt sick. “You showed Sophie a photo of Rachel?” “It wasn’t intentional.” “What photo?” He took his phone out. “My mother sent it years ago.” “Find it.” “I don’t know if I still—” “Find it.” For nearly two minutes, he scrolled. Then stopped. His expression changed. “What?” He turned the phone toward me. A woman stood in a hospital room holding a newborn wrapped in a yellow blanket. Rachel Bennett. I recognized her instantly despite the younger face. Dark hair. Thin shoulders. Exhausted eyes. Sophie stared at the screen. “That’s her.” Eric lowered the phone. “The woman from the dream?” “Yes.” My skin prickled. Daniel said, “She probably remembered the photo subconsciously.” Of course. That had to be it. There was no other logical explanation. Then Sophie said something that made every hair on my arms rise. “No.” We all looked at her. “No what?” “I remember her.” My throat tightened. “You were a newborn when Rachel may have seen you.” Sophie shook her head. “Not from when I was a baby.” “What do you mean?” “She came to school.” Silence. “When?” “I don’t know.” “Sophie.” She rubbed her eyes. “Last year, maybe.” Eric nearly dropped the phone. “What?” “She talked to me after science club.” My heart began hammering. “What did she say?” Sophie tried to remember. “She asked my name.” “And?” “I told her Sophie.” “And then?” “She started crying.” I grabbed Daniel’s hand. “What else?” “She asked if my mom’s name was Laura.” Nobody moved. “What did you tell her?” “Yes.” “What happened?” “She gave me something.” My stomach dropped. “What?” Sophie frowned. “I forgot.” “Sophie, what did she give you?” “I put it in my backpack.” “Was it a note?” “I think so.” “Where is it?” “I don’t know.” “Do you still have the backpack?” “At home.” I stood immediately. Daniel said, “I’ll go.” “No. We both—” “You stay with her.” He was right. “I’ll bring the entire backpack.” Eric said, “I’m coming.” Daniel looked at him. Then nodded. The two men left together. That would have seemed impossible twelve hours earlier. I stayed beside Sophie. Detective Quinn sat near the door, typing furiously into her phone. At 4:07 a.m., Daniel called. “We found something.” My heart jumped. “The note?” “A sealed envelope.” “Read it.” “It has your name on it.” “Open it.” There was tearing paper. Then silence. “Daniel?” He didn’t answer. “Daniel!” His voice finally came. “You need to hear this yourself.” “Read it.” “Laura.” “Read it.” He exhaled. Then began. “Laura, if you are reading this, either I finally found the courage to tell you, or something has happened that made hiding the truth more dangerous than revealing it.” My entire body went cold. Daniel continued. “I am sorry for what I did the night Sophie was born.” I gripped the bed rail. Sophie slept beside me again, unaware. “I did take her from the nursery.” Detective Quinn stood. I held up a hand. Daniel kept reading. “But I did not hurt her.” Tears filled my eyes. “I was trying to save her.” My breath caught. Daniel’s voice grew quieter. “I believed Dr. Victor Hale was using newborn babies to hide something he had already done to my daughter.” I pressed my hand over my mouth. “And I needed proof.” There was a pause. “Keep going.” Daniel swallowed. “I took a small blood sample from Sophie.” The syringe. “I compared it against a sample connected to Hale’s research.” Research? My mind spun. “I discovered something I was never meant to discover.” Detective Quinn stepped closer. “What?” I whispered. Daniel continued. “Sophie’s blood contained a genetic marker that should not have been there.” The hallway seemed to narrow. “Which marker?” Another pause. Then Daniel read the final paragraph. “I spent ten years trying to understand what Hale did.” “I am no longer convinced Sophie was simply born sick.” My hands started trembling. “She wasn’t sick when she was born.” Daniel continued. “I believe something was done before she was born.” My stomach turned. Before she was born? How? The letter continued. “If Sophie ever develops unexplained hormone problems, abnormal growth, early puberty, headaches, or a positive pregnancy test when pregnancy is impossible, take her immediately to a doctor and give them the number written below.” I stared at my daughter. Early puberty. Headaches. Positive pregnancy test. Every symptom. All of it. Rachel had predicted everything. Ten years earlier. “Daniel.” My voice barely worked. “What number?” He read it. Not a phone number. A code. VHX-17-204. Detective Quinn typed it into her phone. I heard the tapping stop. Her face changed. “What?” She didn’t answer. “Detective.” She looked at me. “That code format matches an archived federal biomedical trial registry.” My mouth went dry. “Trial?” “Yes.” “What kind of trial?” She typed again. The screen loaded. Then she whispered, “Oh my God.” “What?” She turned the phone toward me. At the top of an old archived page were five words. VIABLE HUMAN XENOCELL STUDY — 17. Below it was a familiar name. Principal Investigator: Dr. Victor Hale. And beneath that, in bold capital letters: PEDIATRIC/FETAL APPLICATION — TERMINATED. My stomach turned. “When was it terminated?” Detective Quinn scrolled. Then looked at me. “Three weeks after Sophie was born.” I couldn’t breathe. “Why?” The detective read silently. Her eyes widened. Then she looked toward my sleeping daughter. “The study was shut down after an internal investigation reported unauthorized human fetal exposure.” I felt the room tilt beneath me. “No.” “Laura—” “No.” I looked at Sophie. At the IV taped to her small hand. At the scar hidden beneath her hospital gown. At the cancer growing inside a body that had barely reached double digits. Then I thought about Rachel’s letter. Something was done before she was born. Not after. Before. And suddenly the most terrifying question of the night was no longer what happened during those missing nineteen minutes.
