Daniel was still on the phone from our house.

Eric’s voice came through in the background.
“What did the detective find?”
I put the phone on speaker.

When she finished, nobody spoke.

I stood.

Quinn scrolled.

“Someone else knew.”
“Almost certainly.”
“Find them.”
“I intend to.”
There was something about the way she said it.
Controlled.
Careful.
But determined.
She had stopped treating this as a strange hospital incident.

And that terrified me more than skepticism would have.
Sophie stirred.

I immediately ended the call with Daniel. Maybe she expected another comforting lie. He shoved the wheelchair into an officer and sprinted toward the stairwell. Quinn followed. Two officers chased behind her. Daniel pulled Sophie’s bed against the wall. Eric stood in front of her.
