The words stayed in the hallway even after the elevator doors closed.

For the first time, there was something like pride. “Because it worked.” I stared at him. “What?” “Sophie lived.” “She has cancer!” “She lived ten years beyond projection.” “She is not your success!” “No.” His eyes moved toward the blood tubes on the counter. “She is yours.” My breathing stopped. “What does that mean?” Mercer smiled. “Rachel finally discovered what Hale never did.” Dr. Shah looked at the tubes. “Maternal antibodies.” Mercer nodded. “Exactly.” He looked at me. “Your immune system recognized the altered twin cells while Sophie was in utero.” My voice disappeared. “And?” “You produced antibodies against them.” Dr. Shah whispered, “That’s why Sophie survived.” “Yes.” Mercer continued. “Your body spent ten years protecting one daughter from what had been done with the other.” The room blurred through my tears. Two daughters. One I raised. One I never knew I lost. Both used. Both inside Sophie in different ways. I looked at my daughter. And for the first time since this began, the mystery stopped feeling like a puzzle. It became grief.
