PART 9 — THE PERSON INSIDE THE SAFE HOUSE

Smoke curled beneath the door.
The fire alarm screamed overhead.
Detective Bell drew his weapon and shoved Elaine and me behind a heavy conference table.
“Stay low.”
Another pane of glass shattered somewhere down the hall.
Then came footsteps.
Fast.
Running.
Not away.
Toward us.
Bell moved beside the door.

One of the officers outside shouted:
“Police! Show me your hands!”
A crash.
Then:
“Officer down!”
My blood turned cold.
Elaine grabbed my wrist.
“Do not move.”
The smoke thickened.
My eyes watered.
The protected location was supposed to be known only to a handful of people.
Bell.

Two officers.
Elaine.
The district attorney’s office.
And whoever arranged the safe site.
Yet somebody had photographed the building from outside.
Somebody had sent me the picture.
