“My daughter had been dreaming of a class trip to Los Angeles,

I lowered myself into a chair.

“Where did she go?”

“We found her outside.”

“Outside the hotel?”

“Yes.”

“Alone?”

“Yes.”

I pressed my fingers against my forehead.

“Why didn’t anyone call me?”

“We thought we had handled it.”

“You thought you had handled it?”

My voice rose.

“My fifteen-year-old daughter

was missing from a hotel two thousand miles away, and you thought you had handled it?”

“We found her quickly.”

“You just said forty minutes!”

“She was frightened. She wouldn’t explain anything.”

I could barely breathe.

“What happened to her?”

“I don’t know,” the teacher whispered.

That answer frightened me more than anything else.

“You don’t know?”

“She came back barefoot.”

I stared at the wall.

Barefoot.

Lily never walked anywhere barefoot outside our home. She hated dirty floors. She always carried an extra pair of socks in her backpack.
