My husband repeatedly shocked our newborn with electricity until the baby nearly died

The first thing I noticed after the door opened was how quickly my husband tried to become the reasonable one.

He stepped toward the responders with his hands raised, his voice already softer than it had been moments before. He said he was sorry. He said he was frightened. He

said he had made one terrible mistake and that I was exhausted, emotional, and not thinking clearly.

I stood there holding our newborn while a responder guided me farther away from him.

For the first time that night, there was empty space between us.

It was only a few feet, but it felt enormous.

My husband had spent the entire night controlling that space. He had decided when I could move, when I could speak, what I was allowed to say, and what would happen if I resisted him. Now other people were standing between us, asking questions he couldn’t answer for me.
