PART 3 — THE LIST WASN’T RANDOM

The police officer was still holding the evidence bag when Detective Lena Ortiz pulled into my driveway. She didn’t park normally. She stopped crooked across the curb, left the driver’s door open, and walked toward my house with another detective right behind her.The look on her face told me

the note under my windshield wasn’t the only reason she was there. “Where’s Mia?” “Inside.” “Anyone else?”

“Just us and the officers.”
Ortiz stepped into my living room.
“Lock the door.”
One of the uniformed officers did.
Mia stood beside the couch hugging the stuffed llama Kaylee had forgotten during the sleepover.
She looked from one adult to another.
“Am I in trouble?”
“No, sweetheart,” I said quickly.
Detective Ortiz crouched several feet away from her.
