ENDING – My Husband Faced My Mother When She Refused to Leave Our Baby Alone

She hadn’t stopped until outside responders arrived and the situation was no longer something she could control.

Later, when the immediate crisis had moved out of the kitchen, my mother tried one more time to speak to me privately.

She told me she was sorry that things had become so dramatic.

Not sorry for putting the baby in the oven.

Sorry that things had become dramatic.

I stared at her.

“Do you understand what you did?” I asked.

She said she had been trying to save the baby.

“That’s not what I asked.”

She looked away.

I waited.

Finally, she said, “I thought I knew what I was doing.”

That sentence stayed with me.

Not because it excused anything.

Because it explained why arguing with her had been useless.
