My brother told the emergency room doctor our mother was faking, while she lay on the gurney holding my hand.

PART 3

The nurse folded the paper.

Kyle’s jaw tightened.

My mother began to cry.

Not loudly.

Just tears sliding toward her ears while she stared at the ceiling.

I leaned closer.

“Mom. Who is Marissa?”

She swallowed.

“I don’t know.”

Kyle turned sharply.

“See? She doesn’t know.”

But Mom grabbed my wrist.

Her fingers were trembling.

Then she whispered something so quietly I almost missed it.

“Locker 118.”

I looked at Kyle’s key ring.

The orange tag.

My stomach dropped.

“You said that was a gym locker.”

Kyle didn’t answer.

Dr. Anand noticed.

“Mr. Harper, what is in locker 118?”

“Nothing.”

“Then I assume you won’t object if the police check it.”

His eyes snapped toward her.

“You’re calling the police?”
