When I told my wealthy son that I was $3,200 short for an urgent medical procedure, he had just completed a $12 million deal—but he lowered his voice and said, “I can’t help you, Dad.”

PART 3

Richard stepped closer.

“Dad, this isn’t about feelings. It’s about a fifteen-million-dollar asset.”

“Actually,” Larry said quietly from the window, “that is precisely what this is about.”

Richard turned toward him.

“You’re the attorney?”

Larry nodded.

“I’ve represented your father for several years.”

Richard’s eyes narrowed.

“I’ve never heard of you.”

“That was probably because your father never needed you to know.”

Caroline looked between us.

“What did he sign?”

Larry placed the leather folder on the small table.

“Before I answer that, Mr. Bennett, I suggest you listen carefully.”

Richard glanced at me.

Then he laughed.

Not loudly.

Just enough to show that he still believed he could control the room.

“My father is recovering from a major procedure. Whatever document you had him sign can be challenged.”
