PART 3 – I was sorting my husband’s clothes for laundry when a letter fell from his jacket.

Part 3 of a dramatic family inheritance story

The next day, Daniel told Ethan and Lily about Emma.
We sat in the living room.
Daniel came home only for the conversation.
He looked exhausted.
Ethan had returned from his campus visit that morning.
Daniel started badly.
“I need to tell you something I should have told you years ago.”
Ethan frowned.
“Are you dying?”
Lily said, “He has another daughter.”
Daniel stared at her.
“So Mom was right,” she said.
I hadn’t told her.
Teenagers listen through walls.

Ethan looked between us.
“What?”
Daniel explained.
Not everything.
Enough.
He told them about Rachel.
Emma.
The DNA test.
The nine years.
Lily cried.
Ethan became angry.
“You had a sister for us and just didn’t mention it?”
Daniel winced.
“I didn’t know how.”
“You know how phones work.”
“Ethan.”
“No, Mom. Nine years?”
Daniel nodded.
Ethan stood.
“That’s insane.”
He walked out.
