PART 02 – My Son Removed Me From the Family Group Chat…

Part 2 of a dramatic family inheritance story

The next morning, I woke before sunrise.
The house was quiet.
For years, that kind of silence had frightened me.
After José died, silence meant loneliness.
That morning, it meant clarity.

I made coffee, carried the brown notebook to my bedroom, and locked the door behind me.
Then I moved the old wooden nightstand.
Underneath it was one loose floorboard.
José had installed it himself twenty-eight years earlier.
He used to joke that every farmer needed one place where banks, thieves, and curious children could not reach.
I lifted the board.
Underneath was a metal box wrapped in an old flour sack.
Inside were papers.
The original deed to the farm.
Receipts.
Tax records.
Bank documents.
And a sealed envelope with my name written across the front.
Benita.
I recognized José’s handwriting immediately.
My hands began shaking.
I opened it.
Inside was a letter dated only three months before he died.
