Part 3 of a dramatic family inheritance story

“Please come with me.”
I followed him.
The door closed.
For the first time since I had entered the bank, the noise of the lobby disappeared.
The manager placed the passbook on his desk.

“My name is Daniel Reeves. I’ve been the branch manager here for eleven years.”
He opened the book carefully.
“You said Margaret Henderson was your grandmother?”
“Yes.”
“And she told you to come here after her death?”
“Yes.”
“Did she tell you about a trust?”
I shook my head.
“What trust?”
Daniel leaned back.
“That is the problem.”

He turned the passbook around and pointed to the faded red circle.
“That mark was used by this bank decades ago for restricted fiduciary accounts.”
I stared at it.
“What does that mean?”
“It means your grandmother’s account wasn’t simply a savings account.”
He opened his computer and typed something.
A few seconds later, his expression changed.
“You need to understand something, Ms. Henderson. What I’m about to tell you may be upsetting.”
“I’ve already spent the morning digging my grandmother’s passbook out of her grave.”
He looked at me.
“I believe you.”
