ON TUESDAY, I SIGNED A PETITION DEMANDING THAT MY NEIGHBOR’S DOG BE PUT DOWN.

But the bite I had been expecting never came.

Instead, Ranger pressed his enormous body against mine, his weight nearly knocking the remaining breath out of my chest.

For one terrifying second, I thought he was pinning me down before attacking.

Then I felt it.

Warmth.

The dog lowered himself

across my freezing body, pressing his chest against mine and curling his muscular frame around me as if he were trying to shield me from the storm.

I opened my eyes.

Ranger wasn’t growling.

He wasn’t baring his teeth.

He was looking straight into my face, making a low, urgent sound I couldn’t understand.

Then he began barking.

One sharp bark.

A pause.

Another bark.

Over and over, with a strange, deliberate rhythm.
