“Stop Being Dramatic—the Hospital Can Wait,” my husband said before locking me in the bathroom with our newborn.

The first time I held my daughter, I was sitting on the cold tile floor of our bathroom in a small Pennsylvania town, wrapped in a bath towel that had slipped from my shoulders, listening to a stranger on the telephone tell me how to keep my baby warm until help arrived.

My husband, Russell Bennett, was standing on the other side of the locked door, insisting that I had made an unnecessary fuss, just as he had insisted earlier that evening when I begged him to drive me to the hospital.

“You always turn everything into an emergency, Natalie,” he had said, pulling the bedroom comforter over his shoulder. “I’m exhausted. Give me another hour.”

But our daughter had not waited another hour, and neither had the truth I had spent nearly six years trying to explain away.
