The woman who believed that if she loved them enough, they would eventually remember to love her back.
She was gone.
I pressed the intercom.
“Michael, get off the gate.”
He looked directly at the camera.
“Mom, what the hell is this?”
“You heard me.”
“This is my childhood home.”
“No,” I replied calmly. “It’s my home.”

Jennifer stepped forward.
“Mom, this is ridiculous. We’re your children.”
“And you told me to stop calling you.”

Silence.
I could see Lisa lower her phone.
Jennifer’s face tightened.
“That was months ago.”
“I remember.”
“We were stressed.”
“I remember that too.”

Michael finally climbed down.
The security officer stood several feet away, watching him carefully.
Michael pointed at him.
“Who is this?”
“My security officer.”
“You hired security because of us?”
“No.”
