At exactly 1:58 a.m., my 8-year-old granddaughter called me in a faint whisper…

“That’s Lily’s medicine.”

I turned toward Mason.

“Who gave it to her?”

He rubbed his thumb along the seam of his shirt.

“Dad.”

Lily looked at him.

Mason kept going.

“He said she needed to sleep.”

“Why?”

“So she wouldn’t wake up when they left.”

I looked at Lily. She had her knees pulled close to her chest.

Mason watched me.

“Dad said the trip couldn’t work if Lily was awake and sick.”

The words came slowly, with spaces between them.

I asked, “Who else knew?”

Mason looked toward the front door.

“Mom.”

He said it quietly.

“Mom knew about the medicine.”

Lily shook her head.

“I told Dad I didn’t want it.”

Mason looked down at the floor.

“He told me not to argue.”
