I looked up from the hospital chair.
“To who?”
“Anybody willing to stop you.”
His smile was real, so I left the zipper alone.
At 77, I’d spent most of Ethan’s life trying to stay one step ahead of disaster.
He’d barely turned one when my daughter, Sasha, and his father, Cody, died in a car accident.
I was 62 when I stopped being only his grandfather and became his parent, too. I was the person packing lunches, signing school forms, helping with homework, relearning football rules, and pretending I understood teenage slang.
I worked one job, then two, to make sure he had everything he needed.

I laughed.
For a few seconds, there was just Ethan giving me grief. That was all I wanted from the day.
A few weeks earlier, Susie, the social worker helping us through long hospital stays, had pulled up a chair beside Ethan.
“If you could do one thing,” she asked him, “what would it be, Ethan?”
I answered before he could.
“Don’t ask for the moon, kid.”
Susie looked at me.
“Walter. Let him answer.”
I shut my mouth.
Ethan didn’t hesitate.
“See my favorite NFL team play. Just once, Susie. In a big stadium.”
My stomach tightened. I had no money left for a dream that size. Everything was going toward his treatment.
“Buddy…”
“I know, Gramps,” he said. “I was just answering her honestly.”
That hurt worse than if he’d complained.
Susie took my phone number.
“Let me see what I can do.”
I expected nothing.
Three weeks later, she called.
A group of donors connected to the hospital had covered everything.
Two tickets.
Transportation.
A hotel room.
I was stunned.
“Who are they?” I asked.
“They asked to stay private.”
“What do they want?”
“Walter.”
“People want things, Susie. You know nothing is for free.”
“Not this time.”
I asked twice more before we left. Susie finally said, “Take the gift. It’s for him, Walter. Let him have something to look forward to.”
Still, Ethan talked about nothing but that game for days.
So we went.
At the stadium, he wore his old football jersey under his jacket. He looked happier than I’d seen him in months.
He refused the wheelchair.
“I can walk, Gramps.”
“I didn’t say you couldn’t.”
“Then why’d you bring it?”
“Because being stubborn and being tired can happen on the same day, my boy.”
He rolled his eyes.
For 20 minutes, he walked.
Then his steps slowed.
I rolled the chair beside him without saying anything.
He looked at it, then at me.
“Not a word, Gramps.”
“Wouldn’t dream of it.”
He sat.
I adjusted the footrest.
“Accepting help isn’t surrender.”
He narrowed his eyes.
“Did Susie give you that?”
“No.”
“Sounds like Susie.”
“It sounds like wisdom.”
Inside, the noise hit us like a wall.
Ethan loved it.
He shouted during the first drive, complained about a penalty, and explained a play to me twice before announcing that I’d misunderstood football for most of my adult life.
“I’ve been watching since before your mother was born.”
“That doesn’t mean you were watching correctly.”
Then Ethan laughed at something on the field and started coughing.
I was halfway out of my seat before he held up one finger.
“Grandpa. I’m fine. You’re doing the face.”
“What face?”
“The face where you’re about to call six doctors.”
I lowered myself back down.
“You’ve checked my water three times,” he said.
“Hydration matters.”
“Watch the game.”
“I am.”
“No. You’re watching me.”
That stopped me.
Ethan softened.
“I’m okay right now.”

He nudged my arm.
“You’re missing the good part.”
So I turned toward the field.
For almost an hour, I let myself believe this was only a football game.

I looked up and nodded.

“Yes.”
He glanced at Ethan, then back at me.
“Your grandson wasn’t chosen by chance. There’s something special about this trip. These tickets didn’t come from a hospital fund.”
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?”
“Someone specifically asked for Ethan to be brought here.”
My hand closed around the strap of Ethan’s bag.
“Who?”
“There’s someone waiting nearby.”
“No.”
Ethan turned toward me.
“Grandpa, wait.”
I kept my eyes on the employee.
“Does Susie know about this?”
“Yes,” he said. “The meeting was arranged through the trip coordinator. You don’t have to meet anyone if you don’t want to.”
“We’ll stay here.”
Ethan leaned closer.
“I want to know who asked for me.”
I looked at him.
“Five minutes,” I said. “If you want to leave, we leave.”
The employee led us to a quieter section near the concourse, where an elderly man waited beside a row of empty seats.
His hands were trembling.
He looked at me first.
“Walter?”
“Do I know you?”
His eyes moved to Ethan, and his face tightened.
“You look so much like Cody when he was 15.”
Then it clicked.
Ethan looked between us.
“You knew my dad?”
The man swallowed.
“I’m Grant.”
Then he faced Ethan fully.
“I’m Cody’s father.”
For a moment, I could barely breathe. I honestly thought someone might have to call an ambulance.
Ethan stared at him.
“My dad’s father?”
Grant nodded.
I reached for the wheelchair handles.
“We’re leaving.”
Ethan twisted around.
“Why?”
“Because this wasn’t what we agreed to.”
Grant stepped back.
“If Walter wants me gone, I’ll go, Ethan.”
“Then go,” I said.
Ethan’s voice sharpened.
“Not yet, Gramps. I want to hear why he’s here.”
I looked down at him.
That was the first moment I understood this wasn’t only my decision anymore.
We moved farther from the crowd.
Grant kept his distance.
“I tried to see Ethan after the funeral,” he said.
My hand tightened on the chair.
“You called once.”
Ethan turned to me.
“You knew about him?”
“Your father hadn’t spoken to Grant in years.”
Grant nodded.
“That’s true.”
I faced him.
“I had a one-year-old waking up terrified every night. I’d just buried my daughter. I didn’t know you. I wasn’t handing Ethan to a stranger because we shared blood. Before the accident, you made it clear you couldn’t accept the life Cody chose with Sasha.”
Grant held my gaze.
“I understand why you made that choice.”
Ethan looked at me.
“You told me nobody from Dad’s family came.”
“I told you nobody stayed, my boy.”
His expression changed.

“Walter told me to leave you alone. I did, but not because I didn’t care.”
“Then why?” Ethan asked.

“You made Ethan sound like a mistake,” I said.
Grant shook his head.
“I never used those words, Walter. But Cody heard what I meant.”
Ethan stared at him.
“What did Dad say?”
Grant swallowed.

Nobody spoke for a moment.
Then Ethan asked, “Did he ever call you again?”
Grant shook his head.
“He married your mom. Built his life. I kept thinking he’d cool off eventually.”
His eyes dropped.
“Then the accident happened.”
Ethan looked away.
“So you never got to fix it.”
“No.”
“And after he died, you called me expecting to meet Ethan,” I said.
“I called hoping you’d let me.”
“You were a stranger to me. I had a one-year-old who’d lost both parents. I wasn’t handing him over because you regretted what happened with Cody.”
“I understand.”
Ethan looked at me.
“And after that?”
“He called once. I told him not to come.”
Grant added, “And I stayed away.”
“For 14 years,” Ethan said.
“I told myself I was respecting Walter’s decision. I was also afraid I’d repeat what I did with Cody. I’d already pushed one person I loved out of my life.”
“So why now?” I asked.
“A mutual friend told me Ethan was ill. That’s all I knew. Later, I heard he loved football.”
Grant opened the garment bag beside him.
Inside was a high school football jacket.
Ethan touched the sleeve.
“This was Dad’s?”
“He wore it until the cuffs frayed.”
Grant pulled out a folded sheet of paper.
“I found this inside one of Cody’s old playbooks. He wrote it after Ethan was born but never sent it.”
Grant looked at me before offering it.
For a second, the old instinct rose in me. I wanted to read it first and make sure it couldn’t hurt him.
Then I nodded toward Ethan.
“It’s his.”
Grant handed it to him.
Ethan unfolded the page and read quietly before reading the last paragraph aloud.
“Someday I’m taking my son to a real football game. I want him to know why I loved this before he decides whether he does.”
Ethan looked up.
“So that’s why you paid for this trip?”
Grant nodded.
“I couldn’t give my son that day. I thought I could help give it to you.”
“What else are you expecting from me?” Ethan asked.
“Nothing. I brought recordings from Cody’s last high school season. If you want to see them, I’m staying nearby. If you don’t, I leave.”
My instinct was to say no.
Instead, I looked at Ethan.
“Do you want to see them?”
“Yes. But I want to go back to the hotel first.”
“Then that’s what we do.”
“And I want him to come, Gramps. Okay?”
I looked at Grant.
“You follow Ethan’s pace. If he says he’s done, you’re done.”
Grant nodded.
I stepped behind Ethan’s wheelchair, then stopped.
“Want me to push?”
“Yeah, please.”
A small smile appeared.

That evening at the hotel, before Grant touched the recordings, I stopped him.
“Give me a minute with him, okay?”
Ethan was lowering himself onto the bed.
I crouched in front of him.

“Tired.”
“Dizzy?”
“A little.”
“Nauseous?”

“Pain?”
He hesitated.

“And fries.”
“Then that’s what you’re getting.”
He lay back.

“You’ve been doing this alone?” he asked.

I shook my head.

Grant said nothing.
“I didn’t have a plan. I was terrified. Ethan became my whole world before I understood what that meant.”
I held Grant’s gaze.
“So no, I didn’t decide to erase you. I made the decision I thought would keep him steady.”
Grant nodded.
Ethan spoke from the bed.
“Can we watch the video now?”
“After your meds.”
He held out his hand.
Grant watched me pass him the cup and waited until Ethan settled back.
Then he connected the recording.
Cody appeared on the screen at 15.
Ethan smiled.
“He looks like me.”
Grant sat down.
“More than you realize.”
For the next hour, we traded what each of us had.
Grant knew the boy Cody had been.
I knew the man who chose Sasha.
Ethan carried pieces of both.
When Cody threw both hands up at a referee, Ethan laughed.
“I do that too.”
Grant looked at him.
Ethan turned to me.
“Did Mom hate it? Football?”
“She hated losing arguments more.”
He smiled.
Later, Grant stood to leave.

“I will.”
After the door closed, Ethan looked at me.
