My husband made fun of my part-time cleaning job in front of his friends — then his boss appeared at our front door.

The first house I ever cleaned for money belonged to a woman named Mrs. Pruitt, and she cried when I found her husband’s reading glasses.

They’d been missing for six months. Down behind the radiator in the den, covered in dust. I fished them out with a coat hanger on

my first morning and held them up, and Mrs. Pruitt put her hand over her mouth.

“He died in March,” she said. “I’ve looked everywhere for those. I thought I’d thrown them out by accident. I thought I’d lost the last thing he touched.”

I put the glasses in her hand. She held them against her chest.

“Thank you,” she said. “Nobody else would have looked behind the radiator.”

I drove home that afternoon with forty-five dollars in my purse and the strangest feeling in my chest. Like I’d done something that mattered.
