PART 3: Three Days After My Father Died, My Husband Quit His Job and Said My Inheritance Was Enough for Us Both—Then He Made a Shocking Promise to His Mother

Part 3 of a dramatic family inheritance story

PART 3: THE SECOND SIGNATURE

Samuel kept his hand on the locked conference-room door. “Before we do anything, I need you to think carefully,” he said. “Who had access to your signature?” “My husband.” “Bank documents?” “Yes.” “Tax returns?” “Yes.” “Your passport?” “It’s in the safe at home.”“Does Mark

know the combination?” I stared at him. “We chose the combination together.” Samuel immediately called Nora Ellis, an attorney in his firm who handled estate fraud.

She entered the room ten minutes later carrying a yellow legal pad and wearing the calm expression of someone who had seen families destroy themselves over money before. Nora examined both copies of the agreement. The first was the unsigned document Mark had given me. The second was the copy he had emailed to Samuel with my forged signature. “Did Mark see you place the unsigned copy in your purse?” she asked. “Yes.” “Did you leave your purse unattended at any point?” “During the funeral. It was in a small room at the church with our coats.” “Who knew it was there?” “Mark, Diane, and Melissa.” Nora wrote down all three names. “Did the email include a message?” Samuel turned his computer toward us. The email had been sent sixteen minutes earlier. Samuel, Clare signed the agreement this morning before the funeral. She is overwhelmed, so I will handle the remaining details. Please begin preparing the transfer immediately. Half of the trust assets should be assigned to MDC Family Holdings as soon as possible.
