PART 3 – I called my son on Christmas Eve with a chocolate yule log in my hands and asked what time I should come over

Part 3 of a dramatic family inheritance story

Elena glanced at me from across the room.
She didn’t ask questions.
She simply reached over and placed another log on the fire.
The flames rose.
For the first time that night, I felt something strange.
Not anger.
Not revenge.
Relief.

Then my phone buzzed again.
This time it wasn’t Tyler.
It was Ray.
RAY: Hazel, don’t go anywhere. Roads are getting worse. I’ve got a radio report. Your son’s neighborhood is in serious trouble.
I stared at the message.
A few seconds later, another came through.
RAY: County emergency crews can’t reach them yet.

I closed my eyes.
Tyler had made his choice.
But Chloe’s mother was an elderly woman.
There were children in that house.
And no matter what Chloe had said to me, I couldn’t bring myself to wish suffering on innocent people.
