“Already doing it.”
Brielle stood against the wall with her arms wrapped around herself.
I turned to her.
“You said Vaughn and Marla talked about needing one more.”
“Yes.”
“Exactly what did you hear?”

She closed her eyes.
“It was at the apartment.”
“When?”
“Maybe three months ago.”
“Before the insurance policy changed?”
“I think so.”
“Were they arguing?”
“No.”
That answer frightened me.
“What were they doing?”
“Drinking wine.”
“Laughing?”
“Yes.”
I felt sick.

“What did Vaughn say?”
Brielle swallowed.
“He said you were almost ready.”
“And Marla said?”
“After Celia, we only need one more.”
“Then what?”
“I walked into the room.”
“What did they do?”
“They stopped talking.”
“Did you ask?”
“Yes.”
“What did Vaughn say?”
Brielle looked ashamed.

“He told me

they were discussing business clients.” “Did you believe him?” “At the time.” I stared at her. She whispered, “I wanted to believe him.” I understood that more than I wanted to. For years, believing Vaughn had been easier than examining the small contradictions. The late deliveries. The missing cash. The secret calls. The explanations that changed depending on the day. Trust had become something he used against both of us. Detective Ruiz returned several minutes later carrying a tablet. “We have multiple M.H. possibilities.” “How many?” “Eleven directly connected through financial records.” My stomach dropped. “Eleven?” “Some may be unrelated.” “Names.” She hesitated. “Monica Hayes. Melissa Hart. Michelle Holloway. Miriam Hargrove. Megan Holt.” Denise’s head snapped toward her. “Michelle Holloway?” Ruiz looked down. “Yes.” Denise went completely still. I looked at her. “What?” She did not answer. “Denise?” Her face had lost its color. “My sister.” The room changed. “What?” “Michelle Holloway is my younger sister.” Detective Ruiz immediately stepped closer. “Does she know Vaughn Mercer?” “No.” “Marla Keene?” “No.” “Mercer-Hale Logistics?” “No.” “Any connection to the credit union?” Denise rubbed her forehead. “She refinanced her car through that credit union last year.” Nobody spoke. I felt a chill move through me. “What is her husband’s name?” “Eric.” Ruiz began typing. “What does he do?” “Commercial real estate.” “Does he know Vaughn?” “I don’t know.” Denise was already calling. No answer. She called again. No answer. A third time. Voicemail. Her breathing changed. “She usually answers.” “Where does she live?” Ruiz asked. “Lincoln Park.” “Address?” Denise gave it. Ruiz radioed officers immediately. Then Denise called someone else. “Eric.” He answered. She put him on speaker. “Denise?” “Where is Michelle?” A pause. “At work, I think.” “You think?” “I left early.” “Call her.” “What’s going on?” “Call your wife.” “I’m in a meeting.” “Eric, call Michelle now.” His tone changed. “What happened?” “Does the name Vaughn Mercer mean anything to you?” Silence. Denise’s eyes lifted toward Ruiz. “Eric?” “No.” It was too fast. Too clean. Denise heard it too. “Do not lie to me.” “I’m not.” “Does Marla Keene mean anything?” Another silence. Then he said, “Why are you asking me about Marla?” Every person in the room froze. Denise whispered, “How do you know her?” Eric did not answer. “Eric.” “We did some paperwork together.” “What paperwork?” “A loan.” “What loan?” “It’s complicated.” Detective Ruiz stepped closer. “Mr. Holloway, this is Detective Ruiz. Where are you right now?” Eric disconnected. Denise stared at the phone. “That was not normal.” Ruiz was already issuing instructions. “Get a unit to his office too.” My stomach twisted. “September second.” Denise looked at me. “No.” “It could be Michelle.” “No.” “You heard him.” “I know.” Her voice cracked. “I know.” For the first time since she had entered my apartment the previous evening, Denise looked frightened. Not professionally concerned. Not analytical. Frightened. I touched her arm. “We’re going to find her.” She nodded, but her eyes were on her phone. Then it rang. Michelle. Denise answered immediately. “Michelle?” “Why are you calling me eight times?” Denise closed her eyes. “Where are you?” “At work.” “Are you alone?” “What is wrong with you?” “Answer me.” “I’m in my office.” “Lock the door.” “Denise—” “Lock it now.” Michelle hesitated. Then we heard a click. “Okay. It’s locked. What happened?” Denise looked at Ruiz. “Do you know Vaughn Mercer?” “No.” “Marla Keene?” Pause. “Why?” “Michelle.” “Yes.” “You know Marla?” “She helped Eric with some financing.” “What financing?” “I don’t know. Something for an investment property.” “Did you sign anything?” Another pause. “I signed a few forms.” Denise’s face tightened. “Did you read them?” “Mostly.” “Mostly?” “Eric said it was routine.” The exact same words. Routine. Insurance. Paperwork. Trust me. My skin prickled. “Michelle,” Denise said carefully, “has Eric recently changed anything about your insurance?” “My insurance?” “Life insurance.” “Not that I know of.” “Has he asked you to work late? Drive somewhere? Changed your route? Offered you drinks, medication, anything unusual?” Michelle laughed nervously. “What kind of question is that?” “Please answer.” Silence. Then: “He’s been making me tea.” My stomach dropped. Denise gripped the phone tighter. “Tea?” “Yes.” “Since when?” “Maybe a month.” “Does he normally make you tea?” “No.” Nobody in the room moved. Michelle continued. “He said I wasn’t sleeping enough.” “Do not drink anything he gives you.” “What is happening?” “Michelle, listen to me carefully. Police are coming to your office.” “What?” “Stay behind the locked door.” “This is insane.” “Please.” Michelle’s voice softened. “Denise, you’re scaring me.” “I know.” “What did Eric do?” Denise looked at me. Then at the calendar. “We don’t know yet.” A knock sounded through Michelle’s phone. She stopped talking. Denise whispered, “Do not open it.” Another knock. Then a man’s voice. “Michelle?” Eric. Denise stood. “Do not open that door.” Michelle whispered, “That’s my husband.” “I know.” “Why is he here?” Nobody answered. Eric knocked again. “Michelle, open up.” She remained silent. Then he tried the handle. “Come on, Michelle.” Her breathing became audible through the phone. Denise said, “Police are almost there.” Eric knocked harder. “I know you’re in there.” Michelle whispered, “He sounds angry.” “Stay away from the door.” Then Eric said something that made my stomach turn. “Your sister has been putting stupid ideas in your head.” Denise looked at Ruiz. “How does he know I called?” Ruiz’s expression hardened. Eric continued. “Open the door. We need to leave.” Michelle said nothing. “Michelle.” The handle rattled. Then: “September is coming. We don’t have time for this.” Nobody breathed. Ruiz spoke into her radio. “Units expedite. Possible immediate threat.” Michelle began crying quietly. Eric hit the door. “OPEN IT.” Denise shouted into the phone, “Get away from the door!” A loud crash. Then another. The line filled with screaming. “Michelle!” The call went dead. Denise ran toward the hallway. Ruiz caught her. “Where are you going?” “My sister!” “Officers are there.” “I’m going.” “You will slow them down.” “I don’t care.” “You will if it costs her time.” That stopped her. Barely. We waited. Thirty seconds felt like ten minutes. Then Ruiz’s radio came alive. “Suspect detained.” Denise closed her eyes. Another voice. “Female located. Conscious.” She nearly collapsed. I caught her arm. “Michelle is okay.” She nodded, crying. But Ruiz kept listening. Then her expression changed. “What?” She raised a hand. The radio continued. “Possible evidence recovered from suspect vehicle.” “What evidence?” Ruiz asked. A pause. Then: “Photographs of victim’s vehicle. Work calendar. Medication.” My stomach sank. Same pattern. Another pause. “And a printed insurance policy.” Denise covered her mouth. I stared at the calendar on Vaughn’s desk. September 2. M.H. Michelle Holloway. It was her. The investigator beside us said quietly, “That gives us two connected cases.” I turned toward him. “Two that we know about.” He nodded. That was the terrifying part. Two women. Two husbands. Two insurance policies. Two sets of altered financial records. Two men connected to Marla Keene. This was no longer about a cheating husband stealing money. This looked organized. Detective Ruiz began searching Eric Holloway’s information. “Eric and Vaughn incorporated a company together seven years ago.” Denise looked up. “What company?” “Northgate Asset Recovery.” “Never heard of it.” “It dissolved after fourteen months.” “What did it do?” Ruiz scrolled. “Private asset consulting.” I said, “What does that mean?” “It can mean almost anything.” Another investigator leaned over her shoulder. “Run principals.” Ruiz did. Four names appeared. Vaughn Mercer. Eric Holloway. Marla Keene. And a fourth person. Thomas Hale. Brielle gasped. Everyone looked at her. “What?” “That’s my father.” I stared at her. “Your father?” She nodded slowly. “My father died eight years ago.” Ruiz looked at the record. “Thomas Hale was listed as managing partner.” Brielle walked closer to the screen. “That’s impossible.” “Was he in finance?” “No.” “What did he do?” “He owned a small trucking company.” “Did he know Vaughn?” “I don’t know.” “You never saw them together?” “No.” She stopped. Then her face changed. “Wait.” “What?” “When I was nineteen, my father had a business partner who came to the house sometimes.” “Name?” “I don’t remember.” “Could it have been Vaughn?” “No. Vaughn would’ve been too young.” “How old are you?” “Thirty-two.” “And Vaughn?” “Thirty-nine.” Ruiz typed something. Then frowned. “Thomas Hale died in 2018?” “Yes.” “How?” Brielle’s mouth opened. She did not answer. “Brielle?” “Car accident.” The room fell silent. I felt the hairs rise along my arms. “What kind of accident?” Ruiz asked. “He drove off an overpass.” “Was alcohol involved?” “No.” “Mechanical failure?” Brielle’s eyes widened. “The police report said his brakes failed.” Nobody spoke. I could hear my own heartbeat. “Who received his life insurance?” Ruiz asked. Brielle shook her head. “My mother.” “How much?”“I

don’t know.” “Estimate.” “Maybe… half a million?” Ruiz typed again. Then stopped. “Your mother’s name?” “Patricia Hale.” Another search. Another silence. Ruiz looked at Brielle. “Your mother died four years later.” “Yes.” “How?” Brielle seemed confused by the question. “Heart attack.” “Was there an autopsy?” “I don’t know.” “Life insurance?” Brielle’s face slowly emptied. “Yes.” “Beneficiary?” “Me.” “How much?” She whispered, “Nine hundred thousand dollars.” I stared at her. Brielle began shaking. “I didn’t do anything.” “No one said you did.” “I didn’t.” Ruiz raised her voice gently. “Brielle, calm down. Did anyone help you file the claim?” She stared at the floor. Then whispered: “Vaughn.” Denise and I looked at each other. “What?” I said. Brielle’s eyes filled with tears. “I met Vaughn after Mom died.” “How?” “He contacted me.” “Why?” “He said my mother had worked with his company years earlier and he wanted to help me with the insurance paperwork.” My skin went cold. “So Vaughn found you because your mother died?” “Yes.” “And later you started a relationship?” “Almost a year later.” Ruiz asked, “Who was your mother’s doctor?” “I don’t remember.” “Did she have heart disease?” “No.” “Any medication?” “She had anxiety.” “What medication?” Brielle shook her head. “I don’t know.” “Did Vaughn ever talk about it?” “No.” Then she stopped. Her eyes widened. “He asked for her leftover pills.” “What?” “After she died.” “When?” “Maybe six months later.” “Why?” “He said he knew a pharmacy that disposed of medication safely.” I felt sick. “Did you give them to him?” “Yes.” “How much?” “A whole box.” Denise whispered, “Sedatives?” Brielle began crying. “I think so.” Ruiz immediately radioed another unit. “Request archived records on Patricia and Thomas Hale. Full death investigations, insurance files if accessible through warrant, toxicology, vehicle reports.” Brielle turned toward me. “You think he killed my parents?” I did not know how to answer. Ruiz did. “We don’t know that.” But none of us believed the coincidences anymore. Another detective entered the room carrying a phone sealed inside an evidence bag. “We got into the secondary device.” Vaughn’s hidden phone. Ruiz turned. “What’s on it?” “Encrypted messaging app. Most threads deleted.” “Recoverable?” “Maybe.” “Anything still visible?” “One active group.” “Name?” The detective looked at me. Then at Denise. “Harvest.” A chill moved through the room. “What does that mean?” I asked. “We don’t know.” “Members?” “Four active accounts.” “Names?” “They use initials.” He read them. V.M. E.H. M.K. And R.S. Vaughn Mercer. Eric Holloway. Marla Keene. The fourth was unknown. “What are they discussing?” Ruiz asked. “Mostly money.” “What kind?” “Policy payouts. Debt. Transfers.” “And people?” The detective hesitated. “Yes.” My stomach tightened. “How do they refer to people?” He looked uncomfortable. “Targets.” Denise gripped the back of a chair. “How many?” “We haven’t recovered everything.” “How many visible?” “Six.” My breath stopped. Six. Not two. Six women. Ruiz said, “Names?” “Initials.” He read from the device. C.M. M.H. L.P. S.R. D.K. J.B. C.M. Me. M.H. Michelle. Four more. “Dates?” Ruiz asked. “Yes.” My date. August 18. Michelle. September 2. The next was September 27. Then October 11. Then November 5. Then December 1. One every few weeks. Like appointments. Like deliveries. Like someone’s business schedule. Denise whispered, “Oh my God.” The detective continued. “There are notes beside each.” I did not want to ask. But I did. “What does mine say?” He looked at me. “Night driver. Sleep narrative established. Vehicle option.” My stomach turned. Michelle’s read: Tea protocol. Insurance active. Husband ready. Denise covered her mouth. Ruiz asked about the others. “L.P. says pool.” “S.R. says stairs.” “D.K. says medication interaction.” “And J.B.?” The detective hesitated. “Home invasion.” Nobody spoke. These were not ideas. They were scripts. Each death designed to look ordinary. An accident. A tired driver. A fall. A medical event. A robbery. And afterward, insurance. Debt erased. Money transferred. A grieving spouse. I looked at the hidden phone. “How far back does the group go?” “Current device only has about sixteen months.” “So there could be older victims.” “Yes.” “How many?” “We don’t know.” Brielle whispered, “My parents.” Ruiz looked at her. “It’s possible.” The detective said, “There’s something else.” Of course there was. “What?” “There’s a message from this morning.” “From who?” “R.S.” The unknown fourth member. “What does it say?” He read it aloud. Vaughn is compromised. Eric may be too. Shut down the schedule. Relief almost reached me. Almost. Then he continued. Second message: Clean remaining files before police identify Harvest. Ruiz immediately asked, “Timestamp?” “Forty-two minutes ago.” Everyone moved at once. Phones. Radios. Commands. “Trace account.” “Notify cyber.” “Secure Marla.” “Find R.S.” I stepped toward Ruiz. “Where is Marla?” “We don’t know.” “What do you mean?” “She was fired two weeks ago. Her apartment is vacant.” “When did she leave?” “Neighbor says yesterday morning.” My heart sank. “She knew.” Ruiz nodded. “Possibly.” The detective looked at Vaughn’s phone again. “R.S. sent another message seven minutes ago.” The room stopped. “What does it say?” He read: If Celia talks, everything dies with her. Denise stepped in front of me instinctively. Ruiz immediately ordered additional protection. I stared at the screen. “That was sent after Vaughn was arrested.” “Yes.” “So somebody is still active.” “Yes.” “And they know I survived.” “Yes.” My phone buzzed. Every person in the room looked at it. Unknown number. One message. I showed Ruiz without opening it. She put on gloves. “Do not touch anything.” She opened the message. It contained a photograph. My apartment building. Taken from across the street. Timestamped four minutes earlier. Underneath: You should have brought Vaughn the spare key. My stomach dropped. Mrs. Weaver. June. Emmett. “My children.” I ran toward the door. Ruiz shouted my name. “My children are there!” She was already on her radio. “Units to Mercer residence immediately. Possible active threat.” I called Mrs. Weaver. No answer. Again. No answer. Again. “Pick up.” Nothing. I called Emmett’s tablet. No answer. My entire body began shaking. Denise grabbed my shoulders. “Celia, police are going.” “I need to go.” “We’re going.” We raced downstairs. Police vehicles left ahead of us. The drive back felt endless. I called Mrs. Weaver fourteen times. Nothing. At the fifteenth call, someone answered. But nobody spoke. “Mrs. Weaver?” Silence. “June?” Nothing. Then I heard breathing. Very faint. “Emmett?” A whisper. “Mom?” My heart almost stopped. “Baby, where are you?” “In the closet.” “Where’s June?” “With me.” “Mrs. Weaver?” Silence. “Emmett, where is Mrs. Weaver?” “He told her to sit down.” Every part of me went cold. “Who?” “I don’t know.” “A man?” “Yes.” “Is Dad there?” “No.” “Do you know the man?” “No.” “Can he hear you?” “I don’t think so.” I heard June crying quietly beside him. “Listen to me. Stay hidden. Do not come out. Police are coming.” “Mom.” “Yes?” “He knows your name.” I closed my eyes. “What did he say?” “He said you caused a problem.” Denise heard every word. Ruiz, riding ahead of us in another car, was hearing through the open line. “Anything else?” Emmett whispered: “He asked where you keep the insurance papers.” My stomach turned. “Did Mrs. Weaver tell him?” “No.” “Where is he now?” “I don’t know.” Then I heard something through the phone. A door creaked. Emmett stopped breathing. Footsteps. Closer. Closer. “Emmett,” I whispered. No answer. The closet door must have been near the hallway. A man spoke somewhere in the apartment. “Come on, kids.” My heart stopped. “I know you’re hiding.” June whimpered. The footsteps stopped. Then the man laughed softly. A laugh I had never heard before. “Your mother made this much harder than it needed to be.” I covered my mouth. The footsteps moved again. Then: “Emmett.” My son gasped. The man knew his name. “Open the door.” Emmett did not move. “You don’t want Mrs. Weaver to get hurt, do you?” I almost screamed. Denise gripped my arm. “Stay quiet. Police are almost there.” The man tried a door. Not the closet. Another. Then another. “Emmett.” The closet handle rattled. June began crying. “Mom,” Emmett whispered. The handle moved again. Then the line exploded with shouting. “POLICE!” A crash. More shouting. “GET DOWN!” The phone fell. I heard June scream. Then nothing. “EMMETT!” The line remained connected. Static. Voices. Footsteps. My hands were shaking so badly I dropped my phone. Denise picked it up. Then someone spoke through the speaker. “Mrs. Mercer?” A police officer. “Yes!” “Your children are safe.” I collapsed against the seat. “They’re safe?” “Yes.” “What about Mrs. Weaver?” “She’s conscious. Minor injury.” I started crying. For the first time since this nightmare began, I cried without trying to stop. “Who was the man?” “We have him in custody.” “Who?” “We don’t know yet.” “Ask him.” “We are.” Then the officer paused. “But Mrs. Mercer, we found identification.” My breathing slowed. “What name?” “Richard Sloan.” R.S. The fourth member of Harvest. Denise looked at me. We had him. Vaughn. Eric. Richard. Only Marla remained. Then my phone buzzed again. Not a text. An email. Subject: YOU FOUND THE WRONG R.S. I stared at it. “No.” Denise leaned closer. “What?” I opened the message. One sentence. Richard Sloan was disposable. Another. He never knew who ran Harvest. And finally: Neither did Vaughn. Attached was a photograph. Marla Keene standing beside a woman. An older woman. Gray hair. Pearl earrings. Elegant coat. Someone I recognized. I had seen her dozens of times. At school events. Birthday parties. Christmas dinners. Eleven years of family photographs. My hands turned numb. “That’s impossible.” Denise looked at the image. “Who is she?” I could barely speak. “Vaughn’s mother.” The woman who had hugged me on my wedding day. The woman who called me daughter. The woman who watched me save money for her grandchildren. Her name was Lorraine Mercer. And beneath the photograph were four words: She started all of it. Then a second email arrived. This one contained only an address. A farmhouse forty miles outside Chicago. And a message: If you want to know how many women came before you, ask Lorraine about the basement…………
