PART 6 — THE VISITOR OUTSIDE ROOM 412

The handle turned again. Elena moved first. She stepped between Samuel’s bed and the door while I shoved my phone into my pocket. “Don’t open it,” Samuel whispered. Nobody touched the door. Then came three soft knocks. “Mr. Wright?” A woman’s voice. “Hospital security.” Elena didn’t move. “Identification, please.” There

was a pause. Then the woman answered, “Ms. Rostova, we’ve received a report concerning a threat made against Samuel Wright. I need to speak with you.” My stomach tightened. “How do you know Elena’s name?” I called. Silence. The handle stopped moving. Then footsteps retreated down the corridor. Elena immediately pressed the nurse-call button. “Security. Now.” Within seconds, the charge nurse answered. Elena explained what had happened. The nurse sounded confused. “We didn’t send anyone to your room.” My blood went cold. “Lock the door.” Samuel struggled to lift himself. “Caleb, whoever sent that photograph knows you’re here.” “I know.” “No. You don’t understand.” His eyes were fixed on the door. “They know which room.” Two actual hospital security officers arrived less than two minutes later. One stayed with us. The other checked the hallway cameras. Ten minutes later, he returned. “A woman approached this room wearing what appeared to be hospital credentials.” “Who?” “We’re trying to identify her.” “Did she leave?” “She entered a stairwell.” “And?” “The camera on the next floor never recorded her coming out.” Elena frowned. “So she’s still inside?” “Possibly.” The officer’s radio crackled. Then his expression changed. “Excuse me.” He stepped into the hallway.
