Eric glanced at the carrier.

“She’s your daughter.”
“Stop showing up with your little brat.”
Tessa laughed.
Then they shut the door.
I stood on that porch for several seconds.
I don’t remember walking back to my car.
By the time I got home, I had cried until there were no tears left.
I put Chloe down, sat beside her and wondered where I could possibly turn next.
Then I thought of someone I had never expected to call.
Barbara.
Eric’s mother.
We had never been close.
In fact, there had been years when I felt she barely tolerated me.

I couldn’t speak.

“I’ll be there soon.”
An hour later, there was a knock on my door.
Barbara stood outside with her coat thrown over her pajamas.
She was carrying grocery bags.
She walked inside, went directly to Chloe and gently lifted her.

She put the groceries on the kitchen counter.

The house where Eric lived with Tessa did not belong to Eric.
It belonged to Barbara.
She had purchased the property years earlier when Eric could not qualify for a mortgage.
She had allowed him to live there while paying rent far below market value.

And now she was ending that arrangement.
“You can pay the proper rent,” Barbara told him, “or you can move.”

She looked from the boxes to Barbara.
