The Funeral

Friday arrived wrapped in gray clouds.
More than two hundred people filled the church.
Former employees from Hail Mechanical stood shoulder to shoulder with neighbors, cousins, and people I had never met but who somehow had stories about my father fixing their furnace during a blizzard or secretly paying for someone’s heating bill.
Dad had built more than a business.
He had built loyalty.

Mark played the grieving son-in-law beautifully.
He shook hands.
Carried flowers.
Held my elbow whenever someone hugged me.
If anyone had watched us, they would have thought I had the most supportive husband in the world.
Only I noticed the questions hiding behind his kindness.
Twice he leaned over and whispered, “Did Samuel say when the will is being read?”
I pretended not to hear.
