PART 3 – My Father Borrowed $1,000, Then Left Me an Envelope With One Warning: “Don’t Let Your Wife See This”

Part 3 of a dramatic family inheritance story

She handed me a large manila envelope. Across the front, written in my father’s uneven handwriting, were eight words.
For Ethan. Open only after speaking with Maya.
Beneath that was another sentence written more heavily, as if he had pressed the pen into the paper.
Do not let Jessica see this.
My stomach tightened.

“Where is he?”
“He’s still in surgery,” Linda said gently. “The surgeon will update you as soon as they can.”
“And the attorney?”
“She’s in the family consultation room.”

The consultation room was surprisingly warm.
A woman in her early forties stood as I entered. She wore a charcoal suit, rectangular glasses, and carried a leather briefcase that looked older than I was.
“You must be Ethan.”
“Yes.”
She extended her hand.
“I’m Maya Sharma. I’ve represented your father for almost eleven years.”
I stared at her.
“My dad has a lawyer?”
She smiled sadly.
“That’s usually everyone’s first reaction.”
