He gave her a polite smile that didn’t reach his eyes.
“She’s confused,” he said. “She’s been through major surgery. She’s taking medication. She’s frightened. She doesn’t understand what she’s saying.”

The nurse’s expression remained calm.
“I’m not asking you to explain her condition.”
“I’m her husband.”
“I heard you.”
“I’m responsible for her.”

The nurse looked at me.
“Do you want him responsible for you right now?”

My husband’s smile disappeared.
I swallowed.
“No.”
His face changed.
Not dramatically.
Not like in a movie.
Just a tiny tightening around his eyes.
But I knew him well enough to understand what it meant.
He was angry.
Very angry.
