The machine hummed.
Fresh espresso filled the room.
“You’re making coffee?” Elena asked incredulously.
“I don’t like difficult conversations before caffeine,” I replied.

Julian slammed his palm on the counter.
“I’m serious, Vivian!”
“So am I.”

I took my mug, leaned against the island, and finally opened the manila envelope.
The divorce petition looked expensive.
His attorney had used thick ivory paper.
Very dramatic.
I flipped through the pages until I reached the property section.

Then I smiled.
“Oh no…”
Julian frowned.
“What?”
“You actually filed this?”
“Yes.”
“With Attorney Marcus Hill?”

His expression shifted.
“How do you know his name?”
I pointed at the signature.
“Because Marcus represented me six years ago.”
Silence.
A tiny crack appeared in Julian’s confidence.
