The night we brought our newborn daughter home, my five-year-old son….

I still hear Max’s voice sometimes.

Not the cheerful, sticky-handed voice I had heard almost every day since he was born. Not the excited little voice that used to yell, “Mom, watch this!” seconds before attempting something reckless off the couch.

Not even the voice that filled our house with endless questions, superhero stories, and kindergarten adventures.

The voice I remember most clearly is much quieter.

A whisper.

“Mommy, that’s not my sister.”

If he had screamed those words, maybe I would have reacted differently.

If he had thrown a tantrum, refused to share his toys, or complained that the baby was getting all the attention, I would have understood. He was five years old. He had been an only child his entire life, and everyone had warned us that bringing a newborn home could be difficult for him.
