I came home earlier than planned and found my wife unconscious on the sofa while my mother

I was supposed to be gone another four hours.

If the meeting had run as scheduled, I wouldn’t have been home.

That thought bothered me later.

At the time, an early finish felt like good luck.

Clara had barely slept since our son was born, and the past few weeks

had become an exhausting loop of feeding, changing, washing bottles, trying to sleep, and beginning again.

She was still recovering physically.

She kept telling me she was fine.

I knew she wasn’t getting enough rest.

So when the meeting ended early, I decided not to call.

Normally, I’d tell Clara I was heading home.

That afternoon, I thought I’d surprise her.

Maybe I’d take the baby for a while.

Maybe she’d sleep.
