My parents called my mute niece a “difficult child.”

My parents had called Mia a “difficult child” so many times that they seemed to believe the phrase explained everything.

It explained why they rarely brought her to family gatherings.

It explained why every request I made to spend time with her was answered with some version of, “She needs quiet.”

It even explained, apparently, why they thought they could leave a nine-year-old girl at my house while they went on a cruise and expect me not to ask questions.

The morning they brought Mia over, my mother did not knock.

She used the key I had begged her to return years earlier and walked straight into my kitchen wearing sunglasses, even though she had just come in from the driveway.
