For seven years after my daughter died, I sent her husband $40,000 every January to help raise my granddaughter.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Melissa stood in front of me with both hands wrapped around mine, trembling so badly I could feel it through her fingers.

Outside the clinic windows, Calvin’s black SUV rolled slowly across the parking lot.

Then it stopped.

The headlights went dark.

And my granddaughter was sitting in the passenger seat.

“Ava,” I whispered.

Melissa’s face changed instantly.

Not surprise.

Terror.

“Oh God.”

She pulled me away from the reception desk.

“Dad, you need to leave.”

“I’m not leaving without you.”

“You don’t understand.”

“I understand that my daughter has been alive for seven years while everyone told me she was dead.”

“Please.”

Her voice cracked.

“Not here.”

Footsteps sounded outside.

Slow.

Measured.

Calvin had always walked that way.
